Chad Magendanz - 5th Legislative District

Chad Magendanz (pronounced like Häagen-Dazs) is a Navy veteran, software developer, public school teacher, and former state representative for the 5th Legislative District, which includes the eastern third of King County. First elected in 2012, Chad served two terms in the House, quickly rising to a caucus leadership position in his first year and becoming the ranking Republican on the House Education Committee. He also served on the Appropriations, Rules, Higher Education, and Technology & Economic Development committees. Before his time in Olympia, Chad was president of the Issaquah School Board and held leadership roles in several regional and statewide education organizations.

In 2024, Chad ran for State Senate against Democrat Bill Ramos, in what became one of the most competitive races in the state. Now, with the seat open again in a 2025 special election, Chad is stepping back into the race, ready to restore balance in Olympia and bring experienced, bipartisan leadership back to the Senate.

Chad holds a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell and an M.A. in Teaching from Central Washington University. He served 12 years as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy and spent over two decades developing software at Microsoft. Since 2019, Chad has been teaching computer science full-time in the Bellevue School District while also serving as Director of Product Development at Voter Science. He and his wife of 35 years live on Tiger Mountain and are proud parents of two sons, both recent computer science graduates from MIT and the University of Utah.
