Senator Don Benton represents the 17th Legislative District. Senator Benton served one term in the House before his election to the Senate in 1996. Don is the founder and CEO of the Benton Group, a sales and management-consulting firm. Born and raised on a small farm, Senator Benton is a long-time resident of Washington state. He, his wife, Mary, and their four children live in Clark County.

State Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, called Thursday's Washington Supreme Court ruling overturning I-747 "a dark day for homeowners."
Benton introduced a bill during the 2007 legislative session that would have preserved the I-747 limit in the event a court threw it out.

GOP pushed for session

Local Republicans, including Rep. Ed Orcutt of Kalama and Sen. Don Benton of Vancouver, were among the first to call for a special session after the court handed down its decision.
On Nov. 14, Benton posted a petition on his legislative Web site calling for a special session and invited fellow lawmakers to sign it. As of Tuesday, 17 senators and 28 representatives - all but one of them Republicans - had signed.
Benton introduced a proposed constitutional amendment in the 2007 session that would have gone even further, freezing property values and limiting reassessments to 1 percent annually. He vowed to push for passage of that measure in the upcoming session.
